This is a story of a Motor Yacht called Mabrouka which was built in 1926 by Camper & Nicholson. It was owned by several people and the one we know more about is Clement Hirtzell. His grandaughter Pam Coleman visited Villefranche many years ago and lived on board.Recently Pam was in Cannes Marina and saw the yacht again and was intrigued to discover more of the history both of the yacht and of her grandfather.
*(There are some questions about these facts presented below)

MABR0UKA , Camper & Nicholson  1926

A classified historical monument since 1996, the Mabrouka was designed and built in 1926 at the famous British shipyard Camper and Nicholson.
It initially was owned by Lieutenant Colonel B.T.T. Lawrence who fought in the Middle East in the twenties.
*It later became the property of the actor Laurence Olivier (1907/1989).There are no accounts of him owning the yacht so this may have no substance in fact.
It was also owned for some time by Commander Allison, a resident of Menton.
The Mabrouka sailed the Mediterranean in the early years of its career.
Mentioned by the magazine Le Yacht while in Rouen on September 14, 1926, it then left for Paris where it arrived on September 20.
The ship then continued via the canals, spending the winter between Cannes, Nice, Monaco and Bandol.
On May 27 of 1927, it was in Marseille, preparing to reach England via the canals.
Following a stopover in Sartrouville on june 4 of 1927, Colonel Lawrence left Le Havre on June 11 for Southampton.

*In 1940, the Mabrouka participated in the rescue of the allied troops during the Dunkirk retreat. This detail has not been confirmed and must be an assumption without provenance.

One of the owners of Mabrouka was Clement Hertzill

Clement Henry Armitage Hertzill was born in Devon in 1879 the son of a Naval Officer. In 1891 he was twelve living in Dawlish in Devon. In 1901 he was living in Forest Row as a boarder aged 22.He married Emily Frances Alice Owen on 15th August 1906 at Christchurch East Sheen in Surrey near Richmond Park.

He saw military service in the first World War and joined the Royal Flying Corps as an engineer. He was a member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers. He worked in Kenya surveying for an electric power station in Nairobi. He worked in New Zealand. He lived in Wimbledon at 66 Church Road for some years. There is a record of him marrying again at the age of 88 while in Worthing. He died in September in 1971 at the age of 92 at Poole Dorset.
